FIRST at the Fair

On June 10th, 2012, the Holy Cows went down to the San Diego County Fair to help set up and participate in the annual off-season scrimmage held there. Playing by a fresher set of rules, teams in the local area battled each other in randomly generated alliances of two, instead of the standard three. A few alterations were made to scoring points, and in this special game setup, whichever team garnered the most points at the end would rank the highest.

This year, the Cows brought on the heat with their 2012 robot, Daisy Diablo. It was an amazingly fun event for both the participants and the audience. Even with all the fierce competition, the Cows managed to pull into first place by an astoundingly close margin of one point!

Sponsor Dinner 2012

On Tuesday, May 29th, The Holy Cows held their annual Sponsor Dinner to thank those who have given the team the tools they need to succeed. This year’s leaders were introduced, and previous leaders gave speeches relaying their experience being a part of a FIRST team. The new leaders this year are Kaithlyn Abulencia as Director of PR, Ethan Chan as Director of Engineering, Jeremy Howe as Manager of Mechanical, Carmel Fiscko as Manager of Awards, Jaclyn Calkins as Manager of Outreach, Connor Worley as Manager of Software and Electrical, Ambar Avila as Manager of Fundraising, and Carlo Nepomuceno as Manager of Scouting.

A large variety of awards were given out at the Sponsor Dinner, the most prestigious being The Holy Cows’ Founders Award. The sponsor presented with the Founders Award best exemplifies the true meaning of FIRST and has been instrumental in the success of The Holy Cows. This year the team presented this award to Qualcomm, who has shown their excitement and energy for FIRST this season by providing mentors, allowing us to make parts at their machine shop, and being a generous and reliable financial sponsor. In addition to the help of our sponsors, the team could not prosper without parent and student involvement, and we would like to give a shout out to Kerri Dechant, our parent of the year, and Evan Furguson, rookie of the year, for their energy and dedication this season.
